EMDR

Trauma is any distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms your ability to cope. Trauma can cause feelings of helplessness, low self-esteem, and can diminish your sense of self and ability to enjoy life. Professional counseling is very powerful in healing trauma so that you can return to homeostasis and feel peace and happiness.

When something traumatic happens it can get locked in the nervous system replaying the original sounds, pictures, thoughts, and feelings over and over again. Since the experience is locked in, the memory/experience can continue to be triggered at any moment in time. This can be the basis for a lot of discomfort and feelings such as fear, helplessness, and loss of control. When this happens it can feel as though the traumatic incident is happening all over again and create a reaction of flight or fight. The body and the brain cannot separate the difference. The eye movements we use in EMDR- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy unlock the central nervous system and allow your brain to process the experience with full control and in a safe environment. Similar to what we call REM- Rapid Eye Movement when in the sleep state; We utilize bilateral stimulation in eye movements (back and forth eye movements; left to right) to unlock the central nervous system to allow the processing of unresolved traumatic events. The important thing to remember is that it is your brain that will be doing the healing and that you are the one in control.

EMDR is one of the therapeutic interventions I use in my practice. If you are interested in doing EMDR let’s schedule an appointment and talk more about this.
