What is a diagnostic assessment?

A diagnostic assessment evaluates your mental health, focusing on your or your teen’s complaints, symptoms, or disordered behavior. During this assessment we will review patterns in mood and behvaior, psychiatric history, social history, and medications that have and have not worked for you in the past.

This initial psychiatric consultation helps your provider properly diagnose a condition or disorder and then create an effective treatment plan.

Who needs a diagnostic assessment?

You may want to schedule an assessment if you’re suffering from unmanageable mental health concerns or life stressors.

An assessment can diagnose several conditions, including:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Compulsive disorders (OCD, etc.)
  • PTSD
  • ADHD
  • Psychosis
  • Personality Disorders
  • Addiction
  • Various teen mental health concerns

What happens during a diagnostic assessment?

At your consultation, you can expect your provider to be welcoming and transparent about the process every step of the way.  The initial evaluation is typically an hour long and completed in the office, face to face with your provider. There are certain circumstances where a telehealth evaluation may be appropriate. Discuss this with your provider if this is more convenient for you due to distance, health concerns, or family matters that make coming to the office difficult.

Throught the book online link, you have access to your provider's schedule. You have tha ability to make your tentaive appointment without the hassle of calling the office. Once your appointment is approved, you will be sent intake paperwork to be completed to secure your appointment.

During your assessment your provider will:

  • Review psychiatric, medical, and social histories
  • Evaluate your emotions and expressions
  • Assess your perception and thinking patterns
  • Evaluate your cognitive health
  • Discuss your and your family’s medical history
  • Review previous reports and records from school, medical doctors, and specialists
  • Review specific diagnostic tests that were included in intake paperwork

If your provider suspects that underlying health conditions are leading to your mental health concerns, they may encourage a blood test.

After the evaluation, your provider may diagnose you with a mental health condition. They then collaborate with you to develop a holistic, achievable treatment plan. Insight Psychiatry ensures your treatment plan encompasses your specific concerns, preferences, values, and health goals. Together, you and your provider will develop a plan that best suits your needs. This may include medication, therapy, and various lifestyle changes. An initial assessment is the first step in your healing journey and improving your life.

Been on several failed medications? Insight Psychiatry partners with GeneSight®, a company that provides testing to determine how your body uniquely breaks down certain medications. This helps the team assess which medications are best for you in the event you have tried several medications with nosuccessful trials.
